What is Metabolic Syndrome?

My interest in metabolic health is personal.  I have a family ravaged by diabetes (as many do). I’ve witnessed, firsthand, the devastating effects it can have on the body, the medical costs it can incur, and the time lost as “sick time.”

I have worked with many clients with metabolic concerns in many settings: wellness, prevention, hospitalized, as well as in the outpatient setting. I continue to be in awe of the perseverance of these individuals despite the cards stacked against them. It is an honor to be part of their journey and to witness their victories.

So – what exactly is Metabolic Syndrome?

There are multiple definitions — but generally speaking, it is the coexistence of symptoms involving glucose and insulin resistance, elevated cholesterol/triglycerides, extra weight around the middle (central obesity) and high blood pressure.

This can lead to type 2 diabetes, worsened cardiovascular disease, and even illnesses that can affect fertility, weight loss, difficult periods, etc. (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or “PCOS”).

There are many ways that these problems can be addressed.  However, it is well known and well demonstrated that even the most basic of lifestyle modifications can create lasting change, quality health, and the wellness you desire.  These include:

- Balanced diet and nutritional support

- Balancing the microbiome

- Healing the gastric lining

- Hormone balancing + management

- Weight loss + optimized metabolism

- Stress management

While the prevalence of Metabolic Syndromes continue to rise, there is much that we can do within the functional + lifestyle medicine space to help you look and feel your best.  Wherever you are in the process, I would love to partner with you. Please reach out, set up an appointment, and let’s get to the root of this issue.

Be well!
